Shirley M. Marr Milligan

Shirley Mae Marr Milligan, 86, died March 18, 2013, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. She was born July 1, 1926, in Southport to Thomas and Wilma Morton Marr.

She grew up on Southport Island and graduated a year early at the age of 16 from Boothbay Harbor High School.

Shirley worked at several businesses including Porter’s Drug Store, R.R. Donnelley Printing Company in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Carbone’s, Meadow Market, and the Colonial Market. When her children were young, Shirley did laundry to make extra money. During that time, she had the opportunity to do the laundry for the cast of the movie, “Carousel” while it was filming in Boothbay Harbor.

She was a member of the Crescent Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and the Grange and was in charge of the Boothbay Region High School Alumni Association for many years. Shirley was an avid and competitive bowler, and a collector of post cards, stamps and coins. She also enjoyed buying scratch tickets and gambling. Her favorite enjoyment was spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Blake of Trevett, son Tommy Milligan of Brunswick, a sister, Clara MacQuarrie of California; grandchildren: Michelle Rayburn of Georgia, Aaron Blake of Boothbay,  Charlinda Carlson of Newcastle, Amanda Stover of Key West, Fla., and Jessica Stover of Boothbay;  and great grandchildren: Ethan Carlson of Mechanic Falls, Denise Stover of Boothbay, Gavin Carlson of Newcastle, Kyra and Kari Blake of Boothbay, and Olivia Carlson of Newcastle.

A Service of Celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Friday, March 29 at 3 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.

A private family burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay. Friends are welcome to a reception at Joe and Brenda Blake’s home on Trevett at 5 p.m.
