Shirleyann F. Hedgcock
Shirleyann Frances Hedgcock, 92, died peacefully at her home in East Boothbay on December 1, 2013.
She was born April 4, 1921 in Hollywood, Calif., the daughter of the late Seth and Claire (Kinselaar) Burrows.
In her early childhood, the family moved to the East Coast where her mother Claire was a silent movie star in the early 1920s, and her father Seth was an inventor. Shirleyann grew up in New York City where she attended The School of Industrial Arts, primarily studying Children’s Clothing Design and Window Display. After marrying Henry Frank Hedgcock, the family moved to Neptune, N.J., where they lived and raised a family for many years.
She taught art classes at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Ashbury Park for many years and was a fantastic and creative Girl Scout leader. Shirleyann was also famous for adopting rescue animals, making them all a part of the family.
Over the years Shirleyann made sure that she passed on her creative talents to her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Adam and Noell. She was a great lover of food and was a wonderful baker. She was a skilled seamstress and loved creating outfits for her children.
Shirleyann was the adventurous type who loved to try new things. Some of her favorite times where spent traveling in to New York City for a day of shopping and taking in a show on Broadway and eating at her favorite restaurants.
The Hedgcocks moved to Maine to spend time with their grandchildren and where Shirleyann continued to be a strong, independent woman, despite her many difficulties. Over the years she was active in the American Legion Auxiliary in New Jersey and Maine.
Shirleyann was predeceased by her husband, Henry Hedgcock in 1986; her son, Richard David Franklin Hedgcock in 2011; brother, Seth A. Burrows; and sister, Catherine Hanley.
She is survived by her son, Seth Allen Hedgcock and his wife Ann of East Boothbay; daughter, Patricia Scheckner and husband Barry of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Kevin Rollins of North Yarmouth; Adam and Tina Hedgcock of Brighton, Mich.; Noelle Hedgcock, Union, N.J.; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie, Zachary, Winter and Wyeth. And special mention to Layla, her dog and special companion, who will be cared for by Terry McPhetres and Dixie Weissman.
The Hedgcock family would like to express great appreciation and thanks to all the friends and neighbors who helped and cared for Shirleyann in so many ways, over the years.
A Mass of Celebration will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 82 Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor. Immediately following the service there will be a Balloon Release Ceremony, followed by a luncheon. There will a burial service on Friday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. at the Maine’s Veteran Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. The family asks that light blue, white or light-colored clothing be worn for the services.
