Shredding event helps preserve historic Dresden courthouse
On Tuesday, May 20, individuals and businesses in the Richmond-Dresden area can safely dispose of old records and sensitive documents at a shredding event sponsored by the Lincoln County Historical Association. Participants are asked to bring their material to the parking lot of the Richmond Area Health Center from 3-5 p.m.
A shredding truck from Records Management Center will safely turn your checks, bank and credit cards statements, and old tax returns into recycled paper. A requested donation of 20 cents per pound of material will help preserve the historic Pownalborough Court House.
Each participant is asked to limit their load to 200 pounds, so that there is time and room enough for all. For more information, please call Chuck Vaughan at 207-208-0350 or Jay Robbins at 207-737-2239.
Richmond Area Health Center, located at 24 Gardiner Street just off Main Street (Route 197), is providing the space in their parking lot as a public service.
The Pownalborough Court House is the only pre-Revolutionary courthouse in Maine. A few of the many notable people who visited there include John Adams, Benedict Arnold and Robert Treat Paine. Cases from much of the State were tried there at a time when Lincoln County ran clear to the Canadian Border. It is a grand, three story building with pine beams 44 feet long that can be viewed from inside the building.
