Skidompha set to launch Internet radio station; seeks volunteer help
Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta is exploring yet another frontier with the announcement that it is soon to launch its very own Internet radio station.
“With what we’re calling ‘WOWL,’ we will be providing listeners with recorded music, bed-time stories for families, podcasts, live feeds and more,” said Pam Gormley, the library’s director at an annual volunteer celebration event on Sunday, March 30.
“We are engaging the help of volunteers to help set up our ‘broadcast center’ in the library, as well as supplying and managing the production of the content,” Gormley said. “Broadcast hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but may change as we develop. We're obtaining a license to use recorded materials online, as well as a dedicated computer, mixing board, microphones and an analog-digital encoder. We also plan to offer underwriting possibilities to area business and individuals as we do with our other programs.”
The plan calls for the station to be up and broadcasting soon by June, said Gormley. Listeners will be able to access the station via a link on Skidompha's website at www.skidompha.org. Skidompha launched its website 10 years ago and has continually expanded its services to provide visitors with access to the library's digital audio and e-book collections, children and teen programs, an online calendar of events, links to the library's Facebook page and Skidompha Chats with Champions videos, the ability to make secure online donations, and more.
Those who are interested in the behind-the-scenes workings of an Internet-streaming radio station, or just want to know more about this exciting project, please join us for an informational and brainstorming meeting at Skidompha on Friday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to noon or contact Pam Gormley at 207-563-5513 during library hours.
