Stover ‘fed up,’ may leave school committee
Eugene Stover said January 16 he was considering resigning from Wiscasset's new school committee.
Stover told fellow committee members he's fed up, because, he said, nothing is getting done to make a school department. “You’ve got to do things, not talk .... If you’re not going to move then God help the town ...”
“I'm to the point now, I might not come back to this board. I may submit my resignation,” Stover said during the committee meeting in the Wiscasset High School library.
Stover is a past Wiscasset High School assistant principal and former Wiscasset representative to Regional School Unit 12. He made the comments after being outvoted on his request for a closed-door session to discuss personnel.
Stover and fellow committee member Sharon Nichols maintained that the committee needs to prepare for its interviews of three candidates for interim superintendent. There were also other positions to discuss, Stover said.
Chairman Glen Craig, Vice Chairman Steve Smith and member Colleen Bennett voted against the executive session. There’s not enough information yet to discuss, Craig said. They also voted down a proposal by Nichols and Stover to schedule meetings to run three hours instead of two.
Nichols said that when her father was a superintendent of a school system, his meetings would run until 11 p.m.
Even though the meetings are scheduled to run two hours, they can run over, and have, Craig said.
Stover told Craig he wanted the vote against the longer meetings entered into the record. “Then, down the line, when we're not ready, I'm going to remind you of this, if I'm around,” he added.
Asked after the meeting if he was still considering resigning, Stover said: “I'll think it over. I don't know. I might stick around.”
Nichols said she also would be making a decision on whether or not to stay on the committee due to the lack of action toward preparing for the school department.
During the meeting, other committee members disagreed with Stover's assessment. They cited the panel's plans to interview the interim superintendent candidates, and the numerous meetings members have already had with Wiscasset town officials and Regional School Unit 12 officials.
“We are accomplishing things,” Craig said.
