The Strand and Bigelow go livestream for right whales

Thu, 10/15/2020 - 10:30am

The Strand Theatre and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences will co-host a virtual Q&A with the director of the documentary “Entangled,” David Abel, and a Bigelow Laboratory senior research scientist Dr. Nick Record. Bigelow Laboratory's president and CEO, Dr. Deborah Bronk, will moderate the event and ask submitted questions on behalf of the attendees.

The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Those interested can find more information and register for the Q&A on the Strand Theatre website at www.RocklandStrand.com

“Entangled” chronicles the efforts to protect North Atlantic right whales from extinction, the impacts of those efforts on the lobster industry, and how the National Marine Fisheries Service is trying to balance the vying interests – all in the face of rapid climate change. With fewer than 400 right whales remaining, workable solutions are urgently needed. The film, by the makers of “Lobster War” and “Sacred Cod,” won the 2020 Jackson Wild award, known as the “Oscars” of nature films.  Director David Abel is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who covers fisheries and environmental issues for The Boston Globe. “Entangled” is available for streaming at the Strand Theatre website through Oct. 23.

Dr. Record uses math, computer models, and machine learning at Bigelow Laboratory to understand the ocean and find solutions to environmental challenges. One of his current research aims is to develop forecasting tools that predict right whale movement and improve efforts to avoid harming them with fishing gear and ships.
