Sumner W. Rand
Sumner Wendell Rand of Stockbridge, Ga., 74, died on November 14, 2013 after a brief illness.
He was born in Somerville, Mass., on August 3, 1939, the son of Wendell Galen and Helen (Phillips) Rand. When he was 3, his family moved to Southport, where Sumner spent his formative years. He graduated from Boothbay Region High School in 1958.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he spent a 28-year career. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, as well as multiple overseas tours in Germany and Korea. During one tour in Korea, he met his wife of 39 years, Yon Cha Kang. In his Army career, SFC Rand served with the 7th Armored Calvary Division as part of the Red Eye Missile program, FORSCOM, CENTAG in Germany, and as an instructor at the non-commissioned officer school in Germany.
Upon retirement from the Army, he began a second career in security at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Ga. He really enjoyed his time there and met with the former president and Mrs. Carter on many occasions.
Despite declining health, he was an avid sports fan and devoted movie buff, spending many hours watching his beloved movies.
He is survived by his wife, Yon Cha; a sister, Lois Weeks and her husband Charles of Hampden, Maine; nieces, Tracey Weeks of Lynn, Mass. and Kristin Weeks of Hampden.
Service with Military Honor Guard was held November 16 at the Lee’s Funeral Home in Decatur, Ga. Internment will be at the College Park Memorial Park in College Park, Ga.
