In support of St. Philips housing project

    Dear Editor:

For those of us working with people who are homeless or are facing homelessness, the grant awarded to Amistad for the building of 12 housing units at St Philip's Church is more than welcome. The project will provide shelter and support and some hope, and a chance for a better life for the most vulnerable among us -those that are un-housed.

I commend the people of St Philips who are opening their hearts for such an undertaking. I am sure that it has taken a lot of commitment, visioning and discernment to get this project off the ground. My next question is how can I support you? It is true that homelessness is a complex problem and it has been growing for decades. The Maine Legislature is taking steps to address Maine’s Housing Crisis during this session and hopefully there will be options for all people as the reasons for being homeless can be quite varied.

The program at St Philips will have a 24-hour a week staff person to assist those living there with support to obtain permanent housing and access to needed services through Amistad and its network to communities of care.

Best of luck to all of you and looking forward to hearing how this project progresses.
