Artist of the Month

Sylvia Dyer's work on display

Tue, 07/31/2012 - 3:00pm

Sylvia Dyer, a native and well-known artist of Maine, is passionate about many things: gardening, the natural beauty of her home state, and painting. Translating her appreciation of the outdoors onto canvas is Sylvia’s life-long avocation. While Sylvia paints in all media, she is perhaps most renowned for her oils and acrylics. Greatly influenced by Monet, her style is impressionistic – buttery texture, soft edge and rich color dominate. Her flower garden scenes are filled with lustrous light and luscious hues that entice a viewer to take a stroll and inhale deeply. Dyer uses atmospheric perspective with such success that one feels the damp chill of evening on Monhegan and the warm sun sparkling off the sea in Harpswell Sound.

Born in Brunswick, Sylvia grew up working with flowers at Dyer’s Nursery. After studies at the University of Maine in Orono, she honed her art skills with Charles Sovek, Pat McHold, William Spring and Shirley Lewis. She is a member of The Maine Ten and Merry-Meeting Art Association among others.

Dyer is represented by Fore Street Gallery, open year round in Portland, as well as Sebascodeagan Gallery in Harpswell, the Lupine Gallery on Monhegan, and Boothbay Region Art Foundation in Boothbay Harbor. Her work is in many private collections across the United States and Europe.

Dyer is the August Artist of the Month at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. For those who would like to view her display, the library is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Wednesdays when they close at 7 p.m.
