Thompson to head parks and rec
Lisa J. Thompson of Cape Elizabeth was hired as Wiscasset’s new parks and recreation director. She will assume her duties at Wiscasset Community Center on July 10.
Town Manager Marian Anderson introduced Thompson at Tuesday’s selectmen’s meeting.
Thompson has served as the Senior Recreation Manager for South Portland’s parks and recreation and waterfront departments since October 2003. From August 1999 to September 2002, she worked as Wiscasset’s Recreation Program Director. While she was here in Wiscasset, Thompson helped organize summer youth camps and youth and adult rec programs along with after school and family programs that still exist.
Also Tuesday, selectmen voted unanimously to lease space at the airport for $600 a month to Peregrine Turbine Technologies. Owner David Stapp had asked to rent an area near the far end of the runway.
Selectmen approved a July 4 Sheepscot River kayak race. Frank Hansen said the six-mile race will start in Newcastle at noon and end at the Wiscasset waterfront. Last year’s race had about 35 contestants and Hansen hopes for more this year. He said the race has safety spotters along the course, but selectmen asked him and other organizers to meet with the police chief, EMT director and fire chief on an emergency response plan.
Anderson noted Wiscasset got no grant funding for environmental cleanup in the Mason Station area.
