Alna's Janet Verney always surprises husband of 32 years Jeff Verney with her choice of his Halloween costume. Sunday afternoon at Trick or Treat Street on Dock Road, he was a whoopie cushion, sound effect included.

“Good one," he said when asked what he thought of his wife's pick.

The Verneys, chihuahua Lucky, other Verneys and fellow Alna Snowmobile Club members manned one of the roadside stops that offered treats. Dock Road closes to traffic for the annual event.

Jefferson friends Christina Shorey, Mattie Welch and Kristy Bryant dressed as the witches from the 1993 film “Hocus Pocus.” Bryant said she and Shorey gathered their costumes at Goodwill, and Welch, a seamstress, made hers. Bryant‘s daughter Sadie, 12, also tapped movie magic for inspiration. She was Harry Potter, wand in hand.

A fire Alna's Ruth Jones was tending offered warmth on the damp, last Sunday afternoon of daylight savings time. Dressed as a gnome, she smiled and said she is one, but rarely reveals herself as one.
