There's a new flower shop in Wiscasset. It's small in stature, but full of a variety of gift items and greeting cards, as well as houseplants and fresh flowers for a wide array of floral arrangements.

The owner, Datvik Deirkrikorian, is originally from Armenia. She has lived in the U.S. for 37 years, and Maine for 23 years.

Before coming to Wiscasset, Deirkrikorian lived in Rockland and Warren, working in flower shops and plant nurseries, most recently for five years at Moose Crossing Garden Center in Waldoboro. “House plants are my passion,” she said. “Last season at Moose Crossing I decided it was time to make a change. It's a big step, but I feel that I'm ready.”

She decided that the only way to find out was to jump in feet first. She was walking around town in Wiscasset this past fall, and saw the 'for rent' sign on the door at 52 Water Street. “I called the number and took that next step.”

The shop has been open since mid-November. Deirkrikorian said that business was a little slow over the winter. “But I started it, and I figured little by little, day by day, it will get me where I want to go.”

Deirkrikorian will work with her customers to come up with an arrangement that will please. “I just need to know their color preferences and thoughts on design, and I'll work around it,” she said.

Many of the cut flowers are purchased from local farmers. “I want to support local people, so we can help each other,” she said.

If you go in to the shop for flowers or a plant, be sure to look around in all the nooks and crannies. There is a wide array of items for sale, including hand-woven and crochet pieces, wall decorations, decorative pillows and hand-painted plant pots and wine holders and greeting cards. Many of the artful items are from Greece, Armenia, Cyprus and Italy.

Deirkrikorian believes in simplicity when it comes to floral arrangements. “I don't like to overdo it. I want to show the natural beauty of each individual flower.”

“My prices are reasonable,” Deirkrikorian said. “I want people to feel comfortable coming in here and knowing they can afford something.”

Deirkrikorian delivers her flowers herself at this point. When things start bustling she'll have to hire someone to do it. She delivers to the Boothbay area, Southport, Edgecomb, Woolwich, Westport, Bath, Brunswick, and of course Wiscasset. Call for questions about delivery in other areas. Delivery prices are very competitive.

Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting on Memorial Day the shop will be open on Sundays too, from noon to 4 p.m., and she may stay open until 6 during the week. Call 207-882-9333 for more information.
