Waterfront panel approves pier policies
The Wiscasset Waterfront Committee on Feb. 23 approved final changes to the pier policies for the 2017 season.
Among the new policies, vendors may stretch their seasons if the weather cooperates. Vendors will be able to do business on the Main Street and Recreational piers from April 15 to Oct. 31, although they are not required to be present for that entire time. It is hoped, however, that they will be present during the usual tourist season around Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The permits may be requested now. During the meeting, a potential vendor, Todd Jubinville of West Gardiner appeared with samples of his pottery and his wife Elke’s knitting. Jubinville said he had purchased the pier building from a former vendor, and had paid his winter storage fees. He had also filled out the application, but was told he would have to fill out the new application with the changes that were made. If selected, Jubinville plans to have a pottery wheel outside his building, to encourage foot traffic.
It was decided that given the late start for applications and the potentially early start to the season, the committee will need to meet at least once more in March to meet with potential vendors and make recommendations. The tentative date for a second meeting is March 14.
The committee also considered moving its monthly meeting date to the second Tuesday of the month, generally at 5:30 p.m., so more members could attend.
Susan Robson had discussed stepping down as chairman, but agreed to keep serving as chairman as long as she had assistance in the duties. Margo Rafter Strong agreed to serve as vice chairman, with Richard Forrest serving as recording secretary.
