Recently, the fourth grade class at Wiscasset Elementary School embarked on an unforgettable three-day, two-night educational adventure at The Ecology School in Saco. The experience provided students with hands-on opportunities to explore Maine's natural environment while building independence, curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

From the moment they arrived, students eagerly settled into dormitory-style accommodations, enjoyed locally sourced meals and participated in engaging activities designed to teach them about the ecology of our state. Through skits, lessons, games and guided hikes, students learned about topics including nighttime adaptations, glaciers and watersheds.

During recreation time, students worked together to renovate a fort in the woods and expressed their creativity in the school's art yurt. One of the trip's most memorable highlights was collecting soil core samples to investigate the different layers beneath the earth's surface. Students were fascinated to discover the noticeable temperature differences between shallow and deeper soil layers, bringing their scientific learning to life.

Upon returning to WES, students reflected on their experiences and reviewed the many concepts they had explored during their time at The Ecology School. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful discussions demonstrated the lasting impact of this immersive learning opportunity.

To express their gratitude, the fourth grade students have created thank-you cards and a special slideshow presentation for their sponsors. The class is deeply appreciative of the community support that made this educational experience possible.
