Westport Island Column: Rides needed, events galore and watch for those turkeys
One of our neighbors is getting back to work after a recent accident: Dana Norris is looking to find a ride with anyone working in the Boothbay region, either in the morning or evening (or both). He’s the postmaster at the Trevett post office, next to the Trevett Store on Barters Island Road. His duties start at 8 a.m., and he closes up at 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Dana’s game to get to work early or wait a little for a ride, if this matches your commute to Boothbay/Boothbay Harbor. He’s glad to share gas costs or pay a stipend for anyone willing to go out of their way. Please give a call to Dana or Carol at 207-882-4691 if interested.
Is one of your spring chores getting your boat trailer ready for the season? Please take a look at any trailer plate for expiration dates, and stop in to see Dedee to keep up-to-date. Also, motorcycles have a March expiration date. Office hours are Tuesdays, noon to 7 p.m. and Thursdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Do you know what KELT stands for — no, it’s not a funny pronunciation of kilt. KELT is the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust, the group who owns and cares for the beautiful Bonyun Preserve off the West Shore Road. I was reading about a “GPS For Beginners” workshop they’re offering this Saturday, but understand now that it’s full, with a waiting list! If this sounds like something that interests you, call or email Becky Kolak at 207-442-8400 or bkolak@kennebecestuary.org. Check out KELT’s website for birding excursions and more stewardship workshops: www.kennebecestuary.org.
There’s a lot of good cooks in town, and Erin Bailey is definitely someone who enjoys cooking and does it well. She’s having an open house this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. to introduce you to the Pampered Chef, a really high-quality line of kitchen tools for everyday use. All sorts of baking dishes, pastry tools, pans, cookbooks, knives, cutting boards and mats, stoneware. You name it, they’ve got it! Give Erin a call (207-380-6297) for directions to her house.
The Feed Our Scholars Program has a wonderful evening planned for this Saturday, and it will be a great success if lots of us stop by for the delicious spaghetti dinner and bid on cool auction items at St. Philips Church in Wiscasset. Funds raised will go to the “Backpack Program” which provides nutritious meals on weekends for Wiscasset school children. Auction items have been generously donated by Peapod Jewelry, Coastal Vet, Sheepscot Pottery, Greg’s Used Auto, Mike's Log Cabin, Sully's Dogs and many others. The bidding runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and the dinner is from 5:30 to 6:30. Tickets are a deal: $8/adult and $4/child. Reservations are not required, but appreciated. Give a call to 207-882-7184 or 207-882-7647, and leave your name, number of people coming and a return phone number.
The Wiscasset Senior Center has a busy calendar of craft, games, interesting programs and Wednesday Suppers and Thursday Lunches. You can find out what’s going on when by visiting the Wiscasset Community Center or online on the welcome page at www.wiscassetrec.com.
Please add a couple of post-it notes to your fridge: Sunday, April 13, is the Westport Community Association’s program with Kyle and Angie from Squire Tarbox Farm talking about “The Ins and Outs of Composting” at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall. And on Saturday, April 19, the Wiscasset Community Center is hosting the very popular Easter Egg Hunt for children in grades 4 and younger. This fun event begins at 11 a.m.
Slow-going on the dips and bumps in the road gives plenty of time to steer clear of those beautiful but pesky turkeys. Happy to see the dooryard clear of the slippery stuff at mewbarnes2@yahoo.com and 207-882-6055.
