Westport Island: History open house Aug. 4

Mon, 07/08/2019 - 2:45pm

The Westport Island History Committee will hold an open house at Westport’s historic Town Hall on Sunday, Aug. 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. Members will be on hand to display many of the historic artifacts and documents that have been given to the town over the years.

On display will be such items as the 1884-1886 quilt signed by the ladies who contributed to it, ribbons, pins and regalia from Westport’s Grange chapter of 100 years ago, Merrill Jewett’s marine pilot’s license from 1912, uniforms and equipment from the last Westport Island town baseball team, artifacts from the old ferry and causeway bridge, and much more.

Reproductions of Westport’s first record books will be available, and visitors will be able to review the committee’s large collection of photographs, now on display as part of the Maine Historical Society’s Maine Memory Network.

Have genealogy questions? Members of the committee will help with answers or advice.

The committee especially wants to encourage anyone with artifacts or documents relating to Westport’s history to bring them to share with others. Even if you’re not comfortable donating or loaning the item, committee members would like to take information about the artifact or document for our records, to help researchers in the future.

If you’re interested in Westport’s history and want to become more involved with preserving it, come and learn about opportunities with the History Committee and the newly formed Friends of Westport Island History.
