Westport Island officials set town meeting dates
On Westport Island Monday night, Town Clerk and Registrar of Voters Gaye Wagner spoke with selectmen about possible dates for the secret ballot and open portions of the annual meeting in June. Timing for both must be calculated to meet mandatory deadlines.
Nomination papers have to be available 85 days prior to the election but returned to her 45 days before the election. These deadlines are based on meeting another deadline, for absentee ballots.
Selectmen agreed to Wagner’s proposal that the secret ballot take place Tuesday, June 13 and the open town meeting be held Saturday, June 24 at 9 a.m. These dates save the cost of an additional secret ballot election by combining the local election with the state election on June 13.
Wagner said she will need to have nomination papers ready between March 16 and March 21.
Three sets of papers will be available. One is for the third selectman’s seat, currently held by Ross Norton. Norton said he will run. Other papers are for a three-year seat Richard DeVries currently holds on the Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12 board; and a one-year seat Bobbie Newberg currently holds on the same board.
The discussion was part of a long and varied agenda Monday. Meetings for the two previous weeks had been cancelled due to weather and the President’s Day holiday.
In other items, the town has incurred legal expenses of $21,279 for the current fiscal year. Town officials have made arrangements to borrow $50,000 which represents the town’s commitment toward the purchase of the Squam Creek Preserve by the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust. Before finalizing the loan. officials are waiting to learn if KELT has met its funding goals for the purchase.
Gary Webber has been appointed deputy animal control officer and deputy constable. Selectmen also reviewed a request from Laurie Jaramillo for the community association to serve wine and beer at its annual Meet N Greet on June 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the town hall.
The town office has a signup sheet for residents unable to receive cable television. It’s an effort to convince the cable provider to serve more of the island.
