Westport Island plans town votes
Westport Island Town Clerk Gaye Wagner on April 2 gave selectmen the slate of election clerks for the June 12 elections.
Wagner provided the names of 10 republicans, 10 democrats and one unenrolled voter to assist during and after the voting. The town is one of a few that still count ballots by hand.
Nomination papers for second selectman and the RSU 12 school board became available March 1 and are due back to Wagner’s office by April 13.
Absentee ballots became available March 13 and absentee voting starts May 10. All proposed warrant articles need to be received by the clerk by May 1.
The town warrant articles will be available by June 5. Voting in the state and federal primary, RSU 12 budget and the town’s secret ballot will be held on June 12 at town hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The annual town meeting moderated by Chris Cooper is June 23 at 9 a.m. at the town hall.
Resident Julie Casson joined the town office personnel as deputy clerk Jan. 22. According to Wagner, Casson “will ultimately become town clerk” and Wagner will become deputy clerk. Wagner is training Casson to prepare her for her responsibilities.
Also discussed Monday was the need to begin creating the town’s comprehensive plan. As a result, Jerry Bodmer is asking the committee members appointed by the selectmen to meet to elect a chairman and a secretary and to discuss the plan and set dates for follow-up meetings.
The committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in the town office. Bodmer asks those unable to attend to contact him at 882-9244.
