Westport Island shed project may begin soon
Westport Island selectmen will soon finalize the town’s agreement with Griffin Construction to provide the site work for the sand and salt shed. Three companies submitted bids. Griffin Construction bid $58,473; Dan Delano, $66,110; and Ray Labbe & Sons, $72,170.
The proposals were received at the town office by the April 19 deadline and discussions have taken place over the past two weeks between the selectmen, Griffin Construction and Pine Tree Engineering. At Monday’s board meeting, selectmen said they expect to formalize the contract with Griffin within the next week for the proposed price.
Reached for comment about the work, Jonathan DeWick, Pine Tree Engineering project manager, explained it will include creating the trench for the shed’s foundation and digging a utility trench for the electrical line, cleaning the site and bringing in gravel for the areas that will eventually be paved. After the building is completed, loam and seed will be provided.
The project will move forward with schedules coordinated between the various contracted companies. David P. Trask & Son Inc. has been contracted for $157,000 to build the shed and McClintock Foundations of Nobleboro will provide the foundation for $61,850.
Also Monday, it was noted that the warrant article requesting funds for the volunteer fire department will increase by $612 so firefighters responding to an emergency call can receive insurance. The blanket policy offered by Maine Municipal Association and provided by Hartford Life & Accident Insurance will cost the town $34 per firefighter. The department has 18 active members.
The Maine Department of Transportation has reported on its inspection of the East Shore bridge. No major issues were reported; minor scaling and general abrasion were mentioned. Selectmen forwarded the report to Road Commissioner Garry M. Cromwell.
Selectmen will not meet on Memorial Day, May 29.
