WHPC looks at Le Garage application

On March 21, the Wiscasset Historic Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness for a property Dion West owns at 5 Evergreen St. The COA had been tabled so West could bring in images of the windows he had in mind for an enclosed porch.

The commission gave a first look at the proposal for the exterior of the former Le Garage restaurant. Among other issues, the commission will consider the moving of fuel canisters and ways to obscure them from public view; changes to the fire escape needed as a result of a Fire Marshal report; and questions about the building’s older signage, including the Le Garage sign on the front and the restaurant sign that faces the river.  The commission deemed the application incomplete because owner Ed Colburne was not listed as applicant, his contractor Knickerbocker Group was, and because page four was left out. Both items have since been fixed, and the proposal will be on the commission’s April 4 agenda. So will the town’s proposed replacement of fencing at the Ancient Cemetery, Commission Chair John Reinhardt said.

The commission also discussed possible plans for the state’s bicentennial, on March 15, 2020.
