Wiscasset Art Walk wraps up successful season

After some initial showers, the sky cleared for a successful final Wiscasset Art Walk of the season on Thursday evening, Sept. 30.

Artist Susan Perrine was creating a garden structure from twigs on the sidewalk outside Wiscasset Bay Gallery. Perrine said she had numerous event-goers helping with the weaving throughout the evening. She also had other handmade creations for sale in Hasenfus Gallery, including earrings made out of leather.

Also in Hasenfus Gallery were Celia Ludwig with the final additions to the community murals and Jan Whitfield back with decoupaged oyster shell crafting. Both activities were popular, with a steady stream of participants. Wiscasset resident Claudia Sortwell was making an oyster shell with a schooner on it and said she thought she’d make it into a necklace for next year’s Schoonerfest.

In Sylvan Gallery, Suki Flanagan returned to provide harp music for patrons, and members of Garden Club of Wiscasset had a colorful array of flower bouquets for sale outside Treats.

Rick Turcotte and Chris Lannon entertained with folk music and Brother Shucker sold oysters to hungry art walkers. An unexpected addition to the event this time was artist Jay Sawyer of studio JBONE. He was seen rolling a four-foot-high sphere made out of steel shear rings down the street. He said, “I heard there was an art walk, so I’m here walking my art!” He has several public art pieces in Maine including ones in Rockland and at Portland International Jetport.

When asked about the art walk season, head organizer Lucia Droby said, “Our goals for the 2021 Wiscasset Art Walk season had been to offer art and activities to the community which would highlight the new sidewalks and would counteract the post-COVID doldrums. Although we aren’t completely post-COVID, this has been a stunning WAW season with a lot of community participation. With the help of a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, we were able to hire some extraordinary performers like the Downeast Brass Quintet and Mortal Beasts and Deities stilt walkers. As the WAW 2021 season ends, I feel we are the focal point of this creative energy all around us!”
