Wednesday night, March 30, Wiscasset Fire Department did a controlled burn off Federal Street, on the hill between Wiscasset Elementary School and Sherman Field, Fire Chief Robert Bickford said March 31.

“(It was) to keep the vegetation manageable and looking nice for baseball season,” Bickford said. “The fire department has traditionally burned fields in the spring for a number of reasons: Control the fire danger of dry grass, pest control or general aesthetics.”
