Wiscasset FOS fundraising dinner May 2
Saturday, May 2, Feed Our Scholars (FOS) is throwing a sure-to-please event at 5:30 p.m. in St. Philip’s parish hall, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset: a potluck dinner/recipe auction.
People are encouraged to bring a favorite main dish, salad, side dish, or dessert (or more than one) for sampling, but you must also bring a printed or written copy of the recipe(s) to be bid on during the next part of the evening.
After sampling all of the delicious dishes—or as many as one can consume—get your money ready for some brisk bidding on those dreamy concoctions. FOS auctioneer "Big Al Cohen" will hold forth, auctioning the recipes to the highest bidders; all funds benefit FOS programs. A jolly time is sure to be had by all with the spirited but good-natured bidding entertaining attendees.
But wait! If one doesn’t have a dish to share, don’t stay away, there will be plenty of food. Attend, eat, bid, join in the fun, while supporting Feed Our Scholars/Set For Success. And bring friends along, too: The more taking part, the merrier for all!
The Feed Our Scholars Initiative, now in its 13th year, supplies weekend packs of shelf-stable food for participating Wiscasset Elementary schoolchildren dealing with food insecurity. Over vacation weeks when there’s greater pressure on the family food budget, Shaw’s gift certificates are provided. Committed to feeding minds as well as bellies, the group also provides art bags for enjoyment during the winter holiday break, as well as new books tailored to each child’s interest and ability level for their very own to read and reread during the summer months.
The Set For Success event held in Wiscasset Community Center each August, aided by Parents in Education, provides teacher-suggested school supplies to children, pre-K to grade 12, attending Wiscasset schools. The event also includes exposure to various groups’ information tables, a chance for children to have free haircuts, the opportunity to select gently used clothes from St. Philip’s Bargain Basement, have free lunches c/o Healthy Lincoln County’s lunch wagon, and so much more.
For planning’s sake, FOS would appreciate knowing what type of dish you are intending to bring May 2, so please call St. Phillip’s at 882-7184, leaving a short message and return number. An FOS committee member will be in touch. Alternatively, contact the group via https://feedourscholars.wordpress.com/; its Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wiscassetfeedourscholars; or email: FeedOurScholars@gmail.com. Come for the fun and fellowship with the side benefit of helping area youth thrive.
