Wiscasset official to float Gardiner Pond land buy idea
Public access to some acreage on Gardiner Pond could be in Wiscasset's future, if a number of pieces fall into place. Todd Souza, director of the town's recreation department, is interested in exploring the idea, including a possible arrangement with a land trust, now that some parcels on the pond are on the market.
Wiscasset selectmen will hear from Souza at their Tuesday, March 18, board meeting. He is seeking the board's OK to apply for a grant from the Land For Maine's Future board to buy some of the land the Nesbitt family is selling, Souza said in an interview and a memo to Interim Town Manager Don Gerrish.
The site could be a place for fishing, swimming, summer camps and other department programs, Souza said.
“I've reached out to the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust ... as a potential partner,” Souza states in the March 13 memo.
Some of the land for sale is in Dresden; Wiscasset may only pursue buying the local portion, he said.
Also on Tuesday, selectmen are expected to set a date for town meeting; and consider approving the American Legion's project to put up as many as 100 American flags in town. The selectmen's meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the town office's municipal meeting room.
