Wiscasset selectmen turn down school budget validation timeline
Wiscasset selectmen on Tuesday rejected a proposed timeline for the town to vote on the school budget. An email sent to Town Manager Marian Anderson by the school committee asked for votes on May 2 and May 15. Select board members said due to a due date of April 14, those dates did not give absentee voters enough time to receive ballots to vote on the school budget.
“We should instruct them that their materials need to be in by April 14 and if not, we can’t guarantee they can have a vote and therefore, money to run the school,” said Selectman David Cherry.
“The timeline is not acceptable,” said Selectman Ben Rines. Others said if the town could create a budget by April 14, the school board should be able to do so as well.
In other action Tuesday night, the board appointed Andrea Main to the Wiscasset Community Center Scholarship Board of Trustees; appointed Raymond Soule and Kerry Leeman to the Airport Committee; and re-appointed Susan Van Alsenoy to the Board of Appeals. All the votes were 5-0.
The board also agreed to pay for $27,068 in electrical work after the town office failed a Department of Labor audit of the building. Despite attempts to get multiple bids, the lone bid received was from Favreau Electric. The board voted to override its procedure about multiple bids for town contracts.
Anderson announced EMA incident command training, provided information about the shellfish seeding program near Chewonki Foundation, and asked if the board would allow First Congregational Church’s Summerfest on the town common on July 22, and the Easter service on the pier as is tradition. The board approved both.
Debris was removed from behind the Powder House, which had come to be used as an informal dump, and the Evergreen Cemetery, which was becoming overrun with brush.
During the public comment period, Steve Christensen said a lot of people are parking in the two-hour parking lot behind Pendleton’s all night. “I think that’s wrong,” he said. “When I see that, I see abuse. If you have an ordinance on the books, and don’t enforce them, why have them?”
Anderson made a surprise announcement that Todd Souza, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, had submitted his resignation. He is leaving to work for Scarborough.
A planned visit to The Old School House was postponed until the next meeting. And the board held an executive session on a personnel matter.
The board will meet again at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 23, about the budget.
