Wiscasset Senior Center: Annual breakfast June 28
The Senior Center Annual Member Breakfast will be held on Saturday, June 28, starting at 9 a.m. All members are invited and the event is free to current members. As the song says, “the times they are a-changing.” All people who value having a Senior Center in this area should plan on attending the breakfast and get involved.
I came across a folder of old pictures from the Senior Center. They showed a dining room filled with 11 to 12 tables and almost every seat occupied. There were also some pictures of a bus load of members on a day trip to a New Hampshire resort. We can’t go back to what was but we can move forward to even better times.
Last week I had the opportunity to meet the new police chief of Damariscotta, Ron Young. His enthusiasm and we-can-do-it attitude was infectious. He definitely is the type of leader that can “get the troops up and out of the trenches to do battle.”
No matter how good a leader is though, without the troops, the battle can be lost. There is so much potential at the Senior Center, but we need an enthusiastic group of trustees, committee chairs and members. The meal program may be reduced to just the Wednesday public supper. The number of trustees may be reduced from 9 to 6.
Undoubtedly the whole spectrum of events is changing at the Senior Center. Now, can we build it back to something great? It just takes seniors who are enthusiastic about doing for themselves, other seniors, and the community. It requires a commitment of time and energy. We all have excuses for not being able to commit our time and energy. It takes a special person to put aside excuses and do the job. Are you a special person? Will you get involved?
Memorial Day is upon us. It is the opening of tourist season, sunny days and green grass. But don’t forget the following, Memorial Day is for commemorating those who died in military service. Enjoy the cookouts but give pause to remember those who died serving our country.
June 15 is is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This is important. It happens here in Lincoln County. It happens in Wiscasset. It should never happen. Elder abuse prevention starts with an aware community and senior population. There is help out there and attitudes can be changed. Once again seniors helping seniors can make a big difference.
