Wiscasset sets hearing on aid for 2 blighted old facades downtown
Wiscasset will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9 at the municipal building, 51 Bath Road, to gather public input on the acceptance of a Community Enterprise Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The grant would support facade improvements at the buildings that now house Treats and Jodie's Café & Bakery.
Feb. 17, selectmen nodded pursuit of a Community Development Block Grant toward rehabilitating two facades downtown, at 43-45 Water St., home to Jodie's Cafe and Bakery; and 80 Main St., the Rundlett Block, home to Treats. "The project focuses on correcting documented blighting conditions at two priority commercial buildings in the historic village center," Economic Development Director Aaron Chrostowsky said in a memo at the time. Selectmen authorized Town Manager Dennis Simmons to submit a letter of intent to the Maine Office of Community Development and, if the town was then invited to apply for the CDBG, plans called for hearings.
A press release out this week states in part: "Addressing blight now prevents more costly structural problems later, protects the historic character residents value, and boosts economic activity by improving curb appeal and encouraging foot traffic. The CDBG program also brings state and federal dollars into Wiscasset, allowing the Town to make meaningful improvements without increasing the burden on local taxpayers.
"Residents, business owners, and interested parties are encouraged to attend the hearing, ask questions, and share comments. Written comments may be submitted in advance to the Economic Development Director, Municipal Building, 51 Bath Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578, or by email at economicdeveloper@wiscasset.gov
