Wiscasset students vying for Hood Scholarship

When Wiscasset High School is stacked up against some of the larger schools in Maine, it's not always a given the larger school will win out.
Example: The Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship.
Last year, a Wiscasset senior placed in the top 10 for most votes, despite the fact she was lined up against students from Class A schools.
This year, two Wiscasset High School seniors seek to follow in 2014 grad Briana Goud's footsteps and are seeking the $5,000 Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship.
Fellow seniors Maeve Carlson and Kayla Gordon are both looking to secure the scholarship, but will need a little help from the community to move on to the next level.
Both Carlson and Gordon are familiar sights in the red and black: Gordon has been the starting goaltender and captain for the girls varsity soccer team's recent run of success, while Carlson has been named captain in both her junior and senior years.
Carlson was picked as the Wolverine Award winner in 2014 by head coach Duane Goud, who said the award was given to the person who best personified Wiscasset High School's values. Gordon, meanwhile, was chosen as the sportsmanship award winner. Both were honorable mentions for the Mountain Valley Conference team.
Gordon has racked up accolades as starting center for the basketball team, where this past season she was named the team's most valuable player. She was also an honorable mention for the all-conference team.
Carlson has represented Wiscasset on the varsity swim team. Both girls were named academic all-stars.
This spring Gordon will return to the softball diamond, while Carlson will be back on the tennis court.
The Hood Scholarship is granted to 18 students from New England — three per state. Prospective students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average while exemplifying good sportsmanship on the playing field and also performing volunteer work in their communities.
Wiscasset Newspaper will run in-depth articles about Gordon and Carlson in an upcoming edition, including what they plan to do should they receive the scholarship.
Voting will be carried out until April 24. The 10 students with the most votes will be selected for interviews before a panel of judges selects three recipients.
Voting can be done once a day, every day, until April 24 on Hood’s website, www.hood.com/scholarship
