Woolwich dedicates town report to three citizens
The Woolwich Select Board is honoring three citizens who died in 2017-18. The board is dedicating this year’s annual town report to them.
Chairman David King Sr. announced the dedication Monday, March 19. Copies of the 258th annual town report will be available in early April. The dedication is to longtime residents Gloria Brawn, Victor Knight and Diane Longley.
As stated in the dedication, Brawn is remembered as one of the chief advocates for American flags being displayed on Route 1 from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. Thanks to her efforts and the assistance of the Woolwich Fire Department and other volunteers, flags have lined the busy highway from the Dairy Queen to the Taste of Maine restaurant since 2014.
For many years, Brawn was active in the Woolwich Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the American Legion in Bath and Wiscasset Lions Club in Wiscasset.
Brawn was born in Houlton and grew up in Bath where she attended Morse High School. She died Jan. 16 of this year.
Knight and his wife Ruth raised dairy cows at their farm on River Road for 30 years. Many residents remember buying fresh milk from the Knights. Residents will remember seeing Victor Knight’s picture in last year’s town report after he was given the ceremonial Boston Cane for being the community’s oldest citizen. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and served in Europe.
He was born in Madison, Connecticut and lived in Woolwich beginning in 1957. He died at 95 on Jan. 22, 2017.
The town report notes Longley was a teacher, author, television personality, photographer and advocate for people with disabilities. She authored history books on Fort Popham, the Kennebec and Woolwich Central School.
She was a charter member of Woolwich Historical Society and produced “Aunt Diane’s Corner,” a program on the public access cable television channel. Longley grew up in Bath and graduated from Morse High School, Class of 1957. In 2010, she was named Bath Citizen of the Year for her efforts at making the city more accessible for citizens with disabilities. She was a veteran of the U.S Air Force. Longley died at 79 on May 13, 2017.
