Daycare available at Woolwich town meeting
Something new will be available at this year’s annual town meeting at Woolwich Central School on Nequasset Road – free daycare offered by the recreation committee. The meeting is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28.
Child care has been offered by other communities during town meeting but the service is a first for Woolwich, according to Selectman Allison Hepler.
“A few of us had talked about offering it when we switched to holding town meeting on Saturday but nothing came of it,” said Hepler. Later, after she brought the subject up at a recreation committee meeting, the committee offered to organize the service.
Committee member Leslie Gallant said the service will be in the cafeteria, just down the hall from the gymnasium where the town meeting takes place. The school’s cheering coach Cara Kilton and the cheerleaders will supervise the youngsters offering games, coloring and other activities. Snacks will be provided, too, she added.
Gallant said no preregistration is necessary; parents can simply drop their child or children off when they arrive for town meeting.
To spread word of the service, Hepler said the town plans to list it on the town's Facebook page and website.
“It makes so much sense to offer this if we want to enable residents with families to be able to participate in Town Meeting,” Hepler added. “I’m so pleased our rec committee is willing to organize this.”
Along with Gallant, the committee's other members include: Dena Bachman, Jason Libby, Brandon Cahill, Kelsi Tardif, Greg Smith and Beth Harrington.
