Voters validate school budget
Wiscasset voters on May 16 validated the proposed school budget, sending it to the polls in June intact. Thirteen voters turned out at Wiscasset Middle High School's Stover Auditorium for the special town meeting.
Susan Blagden was elected moderator. All articles passed. School committee member Glen Craig announced, because the town audit found $1.1 million that belonged to the schools, he would vote no on all the articles.
Article 2 recommended $3,689,448.70 for regular instruction including salaries, benefits and classroom supplies. Article 3 recommended $2,236,703.49 for special education salaries and supplies. Article 4 recommended zero dollars for career and technical education, as the state covers it. Article 5 recommended $245,163 for total other construction including co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Article 6 recommended $851,977.24 for student and staff support including guidance, health, technology, and improvement of instruction, library, and student assessment. Article 7 recommended $481,366.73 for system administration. Article 8 asked for $474,469.17 for school administration. Article 9 requested $546,145.98 for transportation. Article 10 recommended $1,253,515.27 for facilities maintenance. Article 11, which covers food transfer, recommended $60,000.
Articles 12 and 13 asked for the town to appropriate funds for PreK-12 education as described in the state’s Essential Programs and Services Act, and another $2,261,497.76 in excess of the EPS amount. Funding beyond the EPS sum passed in a 10-3 secret ballot vote.
Article 14 summarized the budget and recommended a total of $9,838,789.96. Article 15 recommended $12,500 for public education. Articles 16 and 17 asked if the schools could create reserve accounts for special education and capital projects. All articles passed easily. Except for Article 13, each passed with one no vote, Craig's.
