Wiscasset Elementary School students have collected pet supplies and raised over $193 for Midcoast Humane. Students and teachers assembled on Thursday morning, June 6 to present MH’s Program Manager Kate Griffith with their gifts.

Teachers Trea Stover and Michelle Brand headed up the collection campaign which included a penny jar in the classrooms.

Music teacher Carole Drury taught the kids a song based on “Skip to My Luo” that students were asked sing to their parents to encourage them to contribute quarters or pet supplies.

Librarian Jessica Bailey posted paper hearts on a bulletin board. Students made them to express their affection for their pets.

Gamestop, Regal Cinema and Dairy Queen donated raffle prizes. The drawing was held at the assembly.

Stover said the tradition of gifts to the animal shelter was started 20 years ago by now retired teacher Lynn Morisette.

Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb merged with Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick in 2016. Griffith said the Edgecomb facility still is used for pet rescue and rehabilitation but pet adoptions are handled through the Brunswick one.

The gifts will go to the Edgecomb facility, said Griffith.
