Woolwich is looking for volunteers to draft a marijuana ordinance for voters to consider. The select board agreed to form the five-member committee following a workshop with the planning board Monday evening.

The committee will have Selectman Allen Greene, planning board member Tom Stoner and three citizen members.

Town Clerk Chelsea Lane said applications are available at the town office during business hours or by emailing townclerk@woolwich.us Applications will be accepted until Aug. 2. Selectmen will appoint the members.

Whether or not to opt in for retail marijuana sales will be left to voters to decide.

After the meeting, Selectman Jason Shaw said he doubted the issue would come before voters until sometime next year.

Selectmen Allison Hepler and Greene reported the Communication Committee was making good progress on a new town website. They also plan to review the town’s social media policy establishing guidelines for committees and departments with Facebook pages. After the new website is activated, the town will own the domain. Tom Davis is chairing the Communication Committee.

EMS Director Brian Carlton said the ambulance department had responded to 16 calls over the last two weeks and made 12 transports.

Selectman Dale Chadbourne said he’d recently been asked about providing assistance to immigrant families who have recently arrived in Portland.

“I told them, when our military veterans and our elderly citizens have all been taken care of, we can talk about taking care of the immigrants,” he commented.

An outdoor chicken barbecue dinner planned for 5:30, Friday, Aug. 2 will kick off Woolwich Day. The annual daylong celebration begins the following day with the second annual Nequasset Paddle, a canoe/kayak race across Nequasset Lake.
