Veggies to Table foraging workshop Aug. 7

Tue, 07/20/2021 - 10:45am

Veggies to Table, a non-profit farm in Newcastle that grows organic produce to donate to community members in need, will be hosting a foraging workshop to raise funds and awareness of the crisis of hunger in our community. As over one in seven Mainers do not have enough healthy food to eat every day and 43% of school children rely on school meals daily, the need for accessible, nutritious food is immense.

The workshop, which consists of an edible plant walk and tasting, will be led by expert forager and wild food cook Rachel Alexandrou on Saturday, Aug. 7. She will share her deep knowledge of wild edibles and how to properly harvest and prepare the foraged edibles with attendees.

Wild refreshments will be served at the end of the plant walk. Alexandrou, an interdisciplinary artist with an education in plant science, loves the collaborative practice of creating experiential work around food, flora, and innovating human relationships to the natural landscape.

The event will take place at Veggies to Table’s farm and will consist of two sessions. The first session will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the second session will be from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be cookbooks and field guides available for sale to those who are inspired to continue their foraging apprenticeship.

To register for the event, email Alexandrou at three.left.hands@gmail.com. Spots are limited! There are 12 spaces available for each session and the cost of the workshop is $65 for adults and $30 for children 16 and under. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Veggies to Table.
