Alfred Waterlow “Al” Ford, age 87, of Bethesda, Maryland and summer resident of Southport Island, passed away in his Bethesda home on Nov. 26, 2021.
Born and raised in California by his parents Norman and Helen, Al graduated from University of California/Berkeley, then got a degree in foreign relations from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. His career spanned 35 years with the U.S. Agency for International Development with posts in many African countries and Haiti.
Al and his family first fell in love with the Boothbay Harbor area in 1981, renting a cottage on Juniper Point. After several summers of renting, the Ford family found a cottage to call their own on Southport Island. Al enjoyed playing tennis with friends at Juniper Point, (competing in many tennis tournaments), going to Southport General Store for a newspaper, eating blueberry pie and ice cream, as well as taking his family out in his boat.
Al is survived by his beloved wife Catharina, daughter Christina (Anthony), son Thomas (Aynoor), as well as three grandchildren.
