Dorothy E. Parmenter
Dorothy E. Parmenter, 92, died peacefully at Clipper Harbor Nursing Home in Portsmouth, N.H., on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013.
She was born on June 25, 1921, in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of the late Albert Joseph Gosselin and Ethel Taylor Gosselin Reed. She grew up between Haverhill and Portland, Maine and was a graduate of the Deering High School.
In 1939 she and her husband, Winfred, moved to Boothbay Harbor. She was an accomplished seamstress and she enjoyed doing art work. Dorothy and Winfred loved to travel, taking extensive excursions throughout the United States, into Canada, and spent several months traveling throughout Mexico. After Winfred died, Dorothy continued to travel and enjoyed many parts of Europe, Germany, Japan and Vietnam. One of her favorite trips was to China, where she was able to walk along the Great Wall.
When Dorothy was in her 50’s, she decided to go back to a college and received a degree in art history. She was extremely proud of this accomplishment. She was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church and of the VFW Auxiliary.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Winfred Russell Parmenter, in 1987; her daughter, Janice Maddocks, in 2003; and a brother, Kenneth Gosselin Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Brewer of Boothbay Harbor; a son, Norman Parmenter of Berwick; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Dorothy’s life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. Pastor Al Roberts will be officiating.
