What's it going to take to fix Alna's North Old Sheepscot Road? Selectmen aren't sure after former road commissioner Mike Trask questioned his successor's plan for a trouble spot there.

One side of the road has been getting closer to the edge of a deep ravine.

Road Commissioner Jeff Verney's plan to move the road by widening the other side of it was projected to cost $7,000 to $8,000; less than $3,000 of that would be his share of the job, with the rest to go to other contractors.

A state engineer concurred with him about moving the road, Verney told selectmen September 5.

But Verney's predecessor Mike Trask said the road as planned would not meet state standards.

“Wouldn't, huh... I'm not going to get into it with you,” Verney said.

A different plan might cost as much as $100,000, potentially delaying the project for lack of funding, First Selectman David Abbott said.

That section of road looks like it could all slide down, along with the new part that would be added, Third Selectman David Reingardt said.

“I don't want to be responsible for a school bus going off,” Reingardt said.

The board decided to find an engineer for the project. Town Clerk Amy Warner will contact some firms for quotes.
