First Twin Villages Community Conversation
The Twin Villages are looking for input on the lot.
The first-ever Twin Villages Community Conversation will be Wednesday, Nov. 13 to discuss the municipal parking lot's future.
There will be two meetings, both from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on November 13 and again on November 21 in the Great Salt Bay School cafeteria.
The towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle will host the discussions, which will focus on the public parking lot.
The lot has been free and open to the public for years, but capital will need to be put back into the lot for improvements and continued maintenance. Other possibilities for the lot included improving the aesthetics of the lot with landscaping, public restrooms and even a waterfront boardwalk.
The lot has been taxpayer-funded for its snow removal and maintenance and with an increased concern about rising sea levels changes will need to be made.
The lot will eventually need resurfacing and improvements to its drainage system. One possibility raised by Dr. Michelle Stutzman was to implement paid parking in the lot to help offset costs.
The town has looked into several options for the lot including paid parking, seasonal and daytime paid parking, and grants, but no further action has been decided yet.
The first meeting of the two towns will focus on information sharing as Engineer Travis Pryor will be on hand to discuss the current condition of the lot and what improvements should and could be made.
The second meeting will focus on the businesses that use the lot and their input on its condition and where they would like to see it go.
Anyone who cannot attend the meetings is encouraged to contact Town Manager Matt Lutkus at townmanger@damariscottame.com.
