Helping those who help
Those who help could be getting a little help themselves.
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Sheriff Todd Brackett spoke with the Lincoln County Commissioners about the possibility of county employees donating money to the United Way.
If the commissioners accept the plan, Lincoln County employees could donate as much or as little to the United Way as they please, Brackett said.
“What we're asking is to allow individual employees to support the United Way and the United Way's programs in the Midcoast,” he said.
Brackett said the United Way has worked with Midcoast organizations like Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Healthy Kids and the CLC YMCA, among others.
Tom Blatz, director of campaign for the United Way of Mid Coast Maine, said the organization has brought help to countless people throughout the county.
“It's a safety net for people, and this would let us spread the word to as many as possible,” Blatz said. “In Bath and Brunswick the government bodies have given their employees an opportunity to give to the United Way.”
Blatz said presentations would be tailored around the county's employees if allowed to proceed.
“No gift is too large and no gift is too small,” Blatz said. “Sometimes it's the people in lowest wage bracket who are most enthusiastic about donating because they understand the most. They have been close to the brink, and they know what we offer.”
No action was taken Tuesday and the issue will be brought up at a later date.
