Megunticook Rowing’s Fifth Annual
Row the Coast is Underway!
The $5597 goal will fund youth scholarships, so
everyone can have a seat in the boat!
Camden, Maine: More than forty rowers ranging in age from 14-70+ are racking up miles on their ergs (rowing machines) in a team effort to row the length of the coast of Maine – 3,500 miles, or 5,597 kilometers – this April. The $5,597 we hope to raise with this springtime fundraiser will go towards youth scholarships.
“Megunticook Rowing is not a part of the high school's sports program, so we have to charge students to participate,” explained Hugh Brock, Board president. “These fees cover insurance, regatta fees, equipment repairs, and minimal compensation for our coaches. We try to keep fees to a minimum but the cost is still prohibitive for some families who would like to participate. This is why we’re Rowing the Coast: We strongly believe that everyone should have a chance to embrace this incredible sport.”
The event will culminate with rowers gathering on Camden’s Village Green Saturday, May 3rd from 10-3 p.m. to erg the final meters of the coast. Megunticook Rowing welcomes everyone to come try out the ergs and row the coast with us. To donate today: https://megunticookrowing.org/row-the-coast/. To participate May 3rd, just show up!
How does Row The Coast work exactly? This is a team effort. There are five teams led by youth rowers. The five teams are competing for meters rowed and funds raised. Donation dollars will challenge each team to row more, because more dollars for the scholarship fund equals more meters rowed.
Coached by Megunticook Rowing members Will and Kelly Schaetzke, Andy Obst, and Sam Abbott, the Megunticook Rowing junior team has been training all winter at our Indoor Training Centers at the Midcoast Recreation Center and Penobscot Bay YMCA. They are now in the home stretch, working out five mornings a week before they get back on the water in May.
Help the juniors sprint to their $5,597 goal by making a donation to challenge your chosen team. Each dollar represents 1000 meters. Make them sweat!

Megunticook Rowing is a 501c3 organization based in Camden, Maine, and devoted to strengthening minds, bodies and community through rowing. Since 2008, the program has grown from a handful of dedicated rowers with a couple of donated shells, to an organization that sends high school-aged and masters rowers to in-state regattas and Boston’s Head of the Charles. Many junior rowers have gone on to compete in Division 1 programs. Just as important, Megunticook rowers develop leadership and teamwork skills as well as a lifetime love of rowing.
