Presumptuous and hopeful
Yes, this is another of my rare but ever hopeful editorials buoyed by whatever latest prospect for business in Wiscasset has made me dream again of a bowling center here. This latest prospect is so vague so far, it is ripe for the imagining.
What do you hope for? Or what do you really hope it isn't?
From the town manager's report in advance of this week's selectboard meeting, it sounds like whatever it is is a ways from happening. The company, whoever it is, has not settled on where it will go, but at least Wiscasset might be in the running.
Presumptuous to dream? Or, is that what dreams are made of? I'm just saying, with a bowling center having been first eyed by a would-be developer years ago as part of a commercial recreational facility off Gardiner Road, none of which came to be, and now with Yankee Lanes in Brunswick an auto dealership (so hard to look when I go by, having pretty much grown up at the longtime center), and with the nearest tenpin center in Augusta now, bowling, a sport for all ages, could, if the numbers work — including being able to keep the rates affordable for open and league bowling — be a nice addition to a nice town, on and off tourist season. You can bowl in the winter.
That's all I'm saying.
And whoever you are as a business considering Wiscasset, good thinking.
Week's positive parting thought: Here is something that is not speculative. Small businesses are choosing Wiscasset. Selectmen are continuing to approve new business licenses. Welcome, all.
