New Village marketing director has long history of marketing, administration
For St. Andrews Village Marketing Director Steven Goold, marketing has always been about building good relationships.
As a nursing home administrator for 18 years, Goold developed teams of caregivers who provided good care to patients. He helped market that care by establishing strong ties with the communities his facilities served.
In the 1990s, Goold took over administration of a facility in Brockton, Mass., that had received negative marks during state quality surveys and had a difficult relationship with its community. By working with staff, Goold corrected the quality issues and received much better marks in the next state inspection.
He also developed programs for families designed to pull the community into the facility. Those programs and a new more welcoming attitude helped improve the facility’s reputation and within a year, the facility’s census numbers improved.
St. Andrews Village Executive Director Wendy Roberts said Goold’s style fits well in the St. Andrews Community.
Goold’s healthcare career started at 19 when he became an orderly at a local nursing home. He was drawn to working with the elderly because he had always loved taking care of his many great-grandparents.
He also met his wife, Christy, at that first job and it wasn’t long before they went back to school together to become nurses. A few years after that, Goold returned to school again to become a licensed administrator. His first job as a nursing home administrator was in Jackman, Maine.
“It was a wonderful experience because I did everything. If the laundry woman called out, I did the laundry. If the maintenance guy wasn’t in, I shoveled the walks.”
That was followed by a position at a much larger nursing facility in upstate New York, and then as both the administrator of a 135-bed nursing home and the assistant administrator of a 40-bed hospital in Lewis County, N.Y.
After about 18 years in administration, Goold moved back to direct patient care because he realized what he enjoyed most was making a difference in the lives of patients. About five years ago, he and his wife moved to Georgetown, to be closer to their daughter and grandson, who live in Bath.
In Maine, Goold’s first nursing position was at Miles Memorial Hospital (now LincolnHealth, Miles Campus). He eventually became nursing supervisor at St. Andrews Hospital (now LincolnHealth, St. Andrews Campus) and accepted his current position this fall.
