Eighth grade holds energy fair
Since November, Wiscasset eighth graders in both science and language arts classes have been studying climate change and alternative energy.
In science class they explored climate change and its consequences, causes and solutions. They found out that one significant way to reduce our contribution to greenhouse gases and consequently climate change is to cut down on the use of fossil fuels and replace them with alternative energy sources.
Local businesses that sell and install alternative and renewable sources (wind, geothermal and solar power systems) have come in to speak to the students.
In December, the class made a trip to the University of Maine at Orono to visit several divisions of the engineering department that deal with alternative energy. Students chose one energy source and in language arts classes researched and wrote persuasive essays as to why this source was the best for Maine.
To conclude this unit of study, students worked diligently last week on constructing displays, models and posters about their energy source. They were on display for parents and the public last Thursday night.
