Arctic freeze creeps into Maine tonight
More frigid temperatures are on the way to Maine, as a blast of arctic air arrives tonight and is expected to linger throughout the rest of the week.
After 6 p.m. temperatures will dip below 10 F in coastal areas tonight, and will likely remain in the single digits on Tuesday.
Tuesday and Wednesday look to be especially cold with the possibility of windchills as low as 15 to 20 below zero, according the National Weather Service in Gray.
“We're going to end up with some cold air again for a few days,” said James Brown, a meteorologist for NWS. “This cold front driving through the Saint Lawrence River Valley will probably hang around until Friday, and then another batch of cold air is coming in behind that.”
While this winter's unseasonably cold temperatures have broken records in cities throughout the Midwest, the temperatures have so far remained about normal for Maine.
“So far we haven't had anything that's remarkably colder than the record,” Brown said.
In January of 1943 the city of Portland recorded temperatures -39 F. Maine's all time lowest temperature was set in 2009 at the Big Black River weather station in Northern Maine when temperatures dropped to -50 F.
Maine residents are advised to keep all areas of skin covered, and to dress in layers of clothing when outdoors.
