Thankful for generosity in our community
This is your last reminder to license your dogs before January 31. The late fee of $25 will be charged on February 1. If not, expect visit from animal control officer.
Last Monday I took my grandsons Andrew, Chris and Chris' friend Gabby to Bath to participate in the Walk for Martin Luther King across bridge and back.
I let kids out and there were only a couple of kids waiting on sidewalk. By the time I got parked, a stream of folks came out of side door of city hall. There were 100 plus marchers, my hat is off to them it was really really cold and that bridge walk part must have been freezing.
The Snowshoe event is February 1, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It’s a great way to explore HVNC. You can walk, ski, snowshoe, bike or paddle a canoe. There’s 1,000 acres of forest, two ponds, a bog and couple of huts and a yurt (rentable), 30 miles of trails that volunteers maintain. For more information, email info@hvnc.org.
Richard Verney and Louise Baird are at their respective homes once again. Some of you may not know Amy Preston of the Alna Store took a fall. Christmas Eve was slippery and Amy fell off her porch and broke her arm.
She had to have surgery and is still wearing a cast. Kind of hard for her to work at store. if you stop by give her a extra few minutes to wait on you.
Did you know the sisters of Alpha Iota are a community service sorority. They work for the common goal of doing nice things for people in the area. Our own Peggy Averil is a very big part of the group in that she is very creative.
They put on two suppers at Deer Ridge for elderly residents, on Thanksgiving and again in April for Easter.
We very much look forward to these dinners. The food is home cooked and brought up to community hall. It is always hot and delicious. After supper we play bingo. The girls make beautiful centerpieces for each table; they are used as prizes, plus they buy scratch tickets also.
We never know, could be candy dish with candy, a lighted glass bowl to do with a holiday theme, and sometimes flowers. We always have a good time, I've been enjoying this for seven years now.
We are not the only ones to benefit from their generosity and help through the years. They host blood drives, support programs through the schools, churches and others as needed. The fundraisers they do allow them to give two different single-parent families a Christmas dinner and gifts for the children.
All of us should be thankful we have ladies like these living in our communities.
Town meeting is not that far off, please start getting you reports written up. Please email them to Amy so much easier to send to printer for her. Everyone who holds a position, or heads up a group within town should be sending in a report. If you have photos that pertain to an event, give them to Amy and she will run them by selectmen for the report.
Have a warm safe week and don't forget Valentine's Day is not far off.
