Boats and Spose
What better way to cure the winter blues than with a little green?
Bath will be a bit greener after the weekend.
The fourth annual Bath Blarney Days Festival will be this weekend and will feature everything from a Shamrock run, to fishermen reciting poetry, to Maine rapper Spose and the grand opening of the 737 Club.
In other words, it's time to put the blues away and get a bit green, Main Street Bath's Samantha Ricker said.
“It's interesting because Bath isn't known for its Irish history,” she said. “So, what we've done is try to incorporate more maritime history.”
History aside, Blarney Days usually warrants the return of spring, Ricker said.
“It's really a chance to get outside, go downtown; it's not as cold and it won't be covered in snow,” she said. “(The Blarney Days Parade) is the first parade of the season.”
The weekend will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 14 with “Voices of the Sea,” which will feature fishermen reciting poetry at the Maritime Museum.
On Saturday the day will start with the 9 a.m. Shamrock Sprint and at 11 a.m. the parade will begin on Middle Street before continuing on to Centre and Front streets.
After the parade there will be a tug-o-war at City Hall at noon and the soda bread baking contest at 1:30 p.m..
From 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a pub crawl at the Kennebec Tavern, JR Maxwell, Front Street Public House and Byrnes Irish Pub.
At 9 p.m. the doors will open at the 737 Club and Ock Cousteau will open for Spose. Tickets are $12 in advance (and can be bought at Bull Moose) and $15 at the door.
