Dresden board delays decisions on officers
At a March 24 meeting, Dresden selectmen voted to postpone making decisions about two town-appointed positions, code enforcement officer and animal control officer.
Currently, the town has few appointed officers. At a recent special town meeting, Dresden voters rejected, 61-26, a proposal to allow town officers to be appointed or hired instead of annually elected.
Dresden has used Richmond's code enforcement officer for the past few years; and the position of animal control officer may or may not entail a contract with Lincoln County for services.
On Monday, board members decided they need more information concerning a Lincoln County proposal that would make animal control officers county employees for contracting communities.
Chairman Phil Johnston said he has to speak with the county administrator about it before the board makes a decision.
If Dresden decides to go with the county plan, the animal control officer would be paid an hourly wage, as opposed to the flat $3,000 that the town currently pays its own officer.
Under the county’s arrangement, the town would be able to receive coverage from other animal control officers in the participating towns.
Information the board seeks includes whether or not the Dresden’s primary officer would be the main one responding in any given animal control situation.
The board's decision also would affect whether or not the current animal control officer would want to remain as the primary officer for the town.
As for the position of code enforcement officer, the board awaits information from the town of Richmond on its current arrangements concerning the office.
Other matters discussed Monday included meeting with the solid waste employees and volunteers at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 to work on various issues.
The board postponed signing an agreement for the KIDS Regional School Unit concerning a $1.52 million grant for minor capital improvements for all schools in the unit. Selectmen said they need more information before signing it.
Selectmen set the next workshop for Monday, March 31 at 5 p.m. at the town office. They will be working on the town’s annual budget in preparation for town meeting in June. They will hold their next regular meeting on Monday, April 7 at 6 p.m. at Pownalborough Hall.
