Westport Island and Alna would pay less to Regional School Unit 12 under the proposed budget the district's board will consider tonight, Thursday, April 10.

According to numbers the district provided, Westport Island's cost for the 2014-2015 budget year would drop 12.42 percent from 2013-2014, to $1,008,617; and Alna's would drop 2.59 percent, to $893,858.

The totals factor in a safety net that helps towns adjust gradually to changes in the district's cost-sharing formula.

Chelsea and Whitefield would also pay less than in 2013-2014; Palermo, Somerville and Windsor would all pay more.

The board's approval would send the budget proposal on to a district budget meeting in May and a district-wide vote at the polls June 10, Superintendent Howard Tuttle said.

The proposed $19.7 million budget would be offset by $650,000 from the withdrawal deal with Wiscasset and about $9 million in state aid, which is about $400,000 less than expected in state aid, Tuttle said. The district is researching the matter, he said.

Also on tonight's agenda are the retirements of Wiscasset Middle School Principal Linda Bleile and Wiscasset High School teacher Lucy Moses.

Bleile has been at the middle school 41 years, 29 as a teacher and 12 as principal She said she announced to her staff last fall that she would be retiring at the end of the school year.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Somerville Elementary School gym.
