Edgecomb Column: Town meeting May 17
It's time for me to be reminding everyone that Edgecomb's Town Meeting will occur on Saturday, May 17, at the Edgecomb Town Hall, starting at 10 a.m. The day before, Friday, May 16, is our election of town officers, which runs from1 to 8 pm. Curiously, on this year's slate of town officers, no one has opted to join the planning board, a three-year position. So, bravo to David Nutt, who has volunteered for the position, as a write-in. Let us all be sure to write him in! But be sure to do it correctly: It is not enough to write in his name. The box beside the write-in blank must be checked, as well, or your vote will not be counted.
Continuing along Bravo Boulevard: Ryland Rich, ballerina in training, with Portland Ballet experience. This summer she will be attending the Boston Ballet's summer camp. Zibette Dean in the Sheepscot Valley Chorus' recent spring concert, singing alto in the Fauré Requiem, Broadway show tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein and also Cole Porter, and a number of poems by Ogden Nash set to music. Zibette is the only Edgecomb resident in the chorus, that I know of. Bob Thomas is exhibiting paintings at The Stable Gallery on Water Street in Damariscotta. The gallery opens May 9, with a reception opening its "Wavelengths" exhibit on Friday, May 16.
More future bravos: the reception for students showing in the Boothbay Region Art Foundation's 31st annual Student Art Show, their parents and friends, will be this Sunday, May 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. The participating schools include our Edgecomb Eddy. The display will be open at the BRAF's gallery on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 9-11 and May 16-18. Call 207-633-2703 for more details.
And speaking of politics, double bravo to Bill Coombs, who is running as an independent for representative, state House District #89!
Bob Reed and I have succeeded in tracking down and rounding up all we can find of our classmates and contemporaries who attended the Salt Marsh School on the River Road back in the 1930s and ‘40s. We plan a truly nostalgic reunion, which I will report on once it has come to pass. We are still trying to locate Delphine and Warren Page, and I will appreciate greatly if anyone knows their whereabouts, if they are still with us. My contact info is below, as usual.
In other news, Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association will hold a trail marking work day Monday, May 19, starting at 9 a.m. at Marsh River Preserve to flag boundaries. Their website is www.sheepscot.org.
For a glimpse of Maine DOT's Route 1 Corridor Management Plan, just now endorsed by our selectmen, go to lcrpc.org/uploads/visual_edit/route1cmp14a1-1.pdf. If you have kept your copies of the State Route27 Corridor Study from 2005, you might brush off the cobwebs and renew acquaintance with it for its suggestions about the Route 1/Route 27 South intersection.
The new study also recommends moving the end of Eddy Road up the hill to achieve better sight lines and a less hectic entrance to Route 1. I trust there will be hearing some day so that Edgecomb can express its opinions.
I’m at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978 and jocam@tidewater.net. This column appears in the Boothbay Register, the Wiscasset Newspaper and at www.edgecombme.com.
