Power Squadron announces safe boating classes
The Squadron Education Officer, John McMullen, announced the Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron’s line-up of safe boating classes to be held throughout the region during this fall. All classes are opened to the public. Whether the course covers the basics, is a refresher or covers maintenance, they contribute to the goal that safe boating is fun boating for all involved.
The Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron, the local unit of the United Power Squadrons, the oldest and largest nonprofit boating education organization in the country, will offer the following classes:
Learn the basics of boating in American's Boating Coarse: rules of the road, navigational lights and buoys, use of compass for bearing, marine charts and introduction to piloting. This course meets the requirements of most states for a recreational boating license. Two classes are devoted to navigation and charting. Book and piloting tools are included in the cost of the classes. The class will meet at Great Salt Bay Elementary School in Damariscotta. Register through Central Lincoln County Adult Ed. Starting on Tuesday, Oct. 2, the class will meet on Tuesdays for seven weeks, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Marine Electrical Systems-(MES) course covers the wiring of your boat, including boat electrical wiring practices and diagrams, direct and alternating current power, galvanic and stray current corrosion, and lightning protection. Troubleshooting is emphasized throughout, so students should feel comfortable performing even tricky wiring tasks after passing this course.
This class will meet at Wiscasset High School starting on Thursday, Sept. 27 and every Thursday for eight weeks, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Register through the Wiscasset Adult Ed.
